Move the playhead forward — wind the “tape” forward. I have used the shuttle feature in my video players on the Mac, but never tried it in Logic.

I need to spend a session or two using the transport controls on the screen, and on the X-Touch. Things I have simply never considered, or have forgotten about from my days of fiddling with tape recorders .

Shuttle Rewind and Shuttle Forward: Repeated key presses increase the winding speed. Repeated presses of the opposing shuttle key slow down the shuttle speed, and eventually change the winding direction. Shuttle disables Cycle mode. Shuttling is halted by the Stop command.

Show or hide channels/tracks that are members of group 13. Every time I read about groups I try to remind myself that they are extremely useful for setting up tracks and channels for a project, even if you can collapse the tracks into a stack, the grouping serves very useful purposes.

Groups inspector in Logic Pro — Apple Support

You use the Groups inspector to define the behavior of each Mixer group. The Groups inspector appears in the Track inspector when one or more groups have been created, and it can be opened as a floating window as well. It contains the following settings:

 When you use an MCU as a control surface the GROUP button gives you access to group settings. You can change the settings for the first seven groups. 

The newer settings — “Quantize-Locked (Audio)” and “Track Alternatives” are all the way at the end of the settings. 

You can assign channels to groups using the MCU as well. Time for me to read the GROUP section of the Mackie Control chapter.

Press the GROUP button to activate group edit mode that allows you to edit various Mixer group parameters.

Scrub Rewind — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

Scrub while rewinding. I use the jog wheel on the X-Touch in most cases. Press the SCRUB button and move the jog wheel in the proper direction. It is easier to speed up/slow down using the wheel.

I have difficulty getting audio to scrub. My suspicion is that I don’t have audio scrubbing enabled in the tracks area.

“Scrubbing with audio in Tracks area” checkbox: When selected, you can scrub audio regions in the Tracks area using the Scissors or Solo tools.

 That was the problem. Only took me years to discover it. I spent a lot of time trying to position the playhead at just the right spot in live recordings. Score one for me.

You can scrub a project to locate or listen to a sound at a particular point in time. When you scrub a project, you quickly audition it by moving the playhead across the Tracks area. The speed at which you move the playhead controls the playback speed. Scrubbing makes it easy to zero in on a particular drum beat or other audio event before cutting or editing a region.

Create a new track using the next channel. Increments MIDI channel by 1. Creates new audio and software instrument channels as well.

I don’t get to create tracks in this way, being led by my mixing work, and possibly misled by workflows I have learned.

On the X-Touch the key sequence is SHIFT+OPTION SELECT where SELECT is one of the 8 channels. Creates a new channel to the right of the selected channel.

Something to experiment with.

Create tracks using existing channel strips in Logic Pro — Apple Support

This command creates a new track below the selected track, and assigns the next channel strip to it. If no next channel strip exists, one is created automatically.

Reduce the vertical size of the display. In the Score Editor the entire page shrinks. In the Arrange window track/region height is reduced.

On the X-Touch press the “cursor” key (center of the direction arrows) and use the up-arrow.

None of the documentation describes the result of the action very well. Experimentation is the way here.

Scroll and zoom the Logic Pro Tracks area — Apple Support

In Logic Pro, drag the horizontal and vertical zoom sliders in the Tracks area menu bar. Drag the horizontal slider left to zoom out for a wider view, or drag it right to zoom in for a close-up view. Drag the vertical slider up for a wider view (more tracks), or drag it down for a close-up view (fewer tracks).
