Rename Track Alternative by Selected Region — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

Rename Track Alternative by Selected Region

Name the current track alternative with the name of the selected region.

Handy way to keep the arrangement window clear and informative.

Track alternatives were not available when I first started using Logic. Not being a person to “comp tracks” the whole process seemed opaque. I need to investigate the use of track alternatives as opposed to alternative versions of a project.

Use track alternatives in Logic Pro — Apple Support

You can create and edit track alternatives and switch between them. Each alternative can contain different regions or arrangements, while sharing the same channel strip and plug-ins. Track alternatives are like “playlists” for individual tracks that can be used to try out different ideas or archive tracks at different stages of development.

Set Nudge Value to Sample ⌃⌥S — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

Set Nudge Value to Sample ⌃⌥S

Sets the nudge value to a sample.

This allows for extremely fine adjustment to the location of audio. One practical application would be to adjust bass tracks that were recorded with a DI and with a microphone on the amplifier. The DI signal will sound sooner than the amped signal. This typically doesn’t sound so good. Adjusting the DI track forward by a few samples (or move the amped track backward) can make the sound much better.

If multiple instruments were captured by microphones at the same time I would move the DI forward. If it’s only the bass tracks it doesn’t matter which one you move.

NB check the phase of the two signals. Flipping the phase can make an enormous difference in the sound.

Move regions in the Logic Pro Tracks area — Apple Support

You can nudge regions (move them in small increments) left or right using key commands. To nudge regions, you first set the nudge value, then move selected regions by this value. Alternatively, you can nudge regions by a set value.

Rotate Left by Nudge Value ⌃⌥⌘← — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

Rotate Left by Nudge Value ⌃⌥⌘←

Rotate the contents of the selected region to the left.

Rotating an audio region seems like such an odd thing to do, unless you’re making beats or constructing music. It certainly can make for some interesting sounds,

You can also rotate regions. Similar to slipping, rotating moves the region content left or right by the nudge value, but with the difference that content that extends past the region border on one side reappears on the other side, as though the region were a loop.

When an audio region is rotated, it is converted to a one-track folder (indicated by a folder icon in the upper-left corner of the region) containing two regions. If it is rotated multiple times, the number of regions in the one-track folder stays the same, but the junction point between the two regions moves through the folder, reflecting the extent of the cumulative rotation. You can unpack the one-track folder, or unpack and merge it to a single region, by clicking the folder icon and choosing corresponding commands from the menu that appears.

Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Division — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Division

Move the selected region/event to the right to the next division boundary. The division can be seen in the LCD display where there is a popup menu that lets you select the division. 1/4 (quarter note) to 1/192 (triplet 1/128 note).

Fade Out ⌃O — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

  Fade Out ⌃O

Create a destructive fade out on the selected audio. The selected audio will be reduced in volume (as defined by the fade curve) from the current level down to zero.

I prefer doing non-destructive fades on regions.

Add fades to audio files in Logic Pro — Apple Support

You can destructively fade in or out on an entire audio file, or a selected area in the Audio File Editor. Your changes are written to the file.
