Every morning. Find the scale on the piano. Do the I / IV / I / V / V7 / I chords. Do the i / iv / i / V / V7 / i chords,

I like doing the i , i sus4, V chords as well.

I should really remember to fire up Logic Pro X with my “Quick Record” template before I hit the keyboard. The template has an audio track set to my Advanced Audio DM20 (RE20ish) and a MIDI track ready to record (E-piano).

Set the MIDI channel of the select(ed) event(s) to 15. Somehow I don’t think I would map a key command to set a specific channel, but I might map the ‘Event Channel +1’ and ‘Event Channel -1’ commands.

My most typical use would be to change an entire MIDI region’s channel to “other than 1” for use with my orchestral instruments (Miroslav Philharmonik) or SampleTank. Put the MIDI region on the proper track for making parts, change the channel to match the ‘multi’ settings on the instrument. Far easier than trying to split the keyboard.

My KORG software instruments are a candidate as well — M1 and Wavestation.

Event List overview — Logic Pro X:

The Event List is the most powerful, flexible, and complete MIDI editor in Logic Pro. All MIDI event types are listed alphanumerically in the Event List.

You can:

View all aspects of events—start and end points, length, channel, and values

View all events in a region

Filter the list to restrict this view to one or more event types, such as notes, pitch bend events, or both

Customized Event List views are saved to screensets and are displayed when screensets are recalled. This makes the selection and editing of events faster and simpler.

All functions and options are shown at the top of the Event List area. The events themselves are shown in the list below.

Normally I would use the popup menu in the Region window. If I was working heavily with MIDI notes I would probably set the previous/next commands up.

Quantize parameter values — Logic Pro X:

You can quantize selected audio or MIDI regions (including a mixed region selection) using the Quantize parameter in the Region inspector. This parameter determines the division of the quantization grid.

MIDI quantization. The holy grail and the pit of tar. When properly used we can get accurate scores and more realistic “performances”.

The Region inspector allows for changing quantization non-destructively. The changes made here do not alter the events permanently, much like changing the gain of an audio region.

MIDI region parameters — Logic Pro X:

You can apply the MIDI region parameter settings of all selected MIDI regions and folders with the Functions > MIDI Region Parameters > Apply All Parameters Permanently command.

This means that all settings are actually written as data, and playback parameters revert to normal values. The audible result remains the same. The Loop parameter and advanced quantization parameters (Q-Velocity, Q-Length, Q-Flam, Q-Range, and Q-Strength) are not affected. However, use this carefully as you lose the ability change your mind about MIDI region edits.

I fondly recall the fine control of MIDI from Opcode Vision and Studio Vision. Emagic Notator (then Logic) showed up on the scene right around the time of my full commitment to Opcode software and tools. When Gibson bought Opcode I thought the Mac was doomed as the computer for musicians.

My memory could be faulty, but I’m pretty sure Dave Oppenheim from Opcode got hired by Apple in the late 1990s. The whole Core Audio and Core MIDI worlds inside macOS and iOS are so much like OMS.
