You can edit zone and group parameters numerically in the Mapping pane zone view and group view. You can also graphically edit a number of zone and group parameters in the Mapping pane keyboard view and the Zone pane.

In the EXS24 Sampler. Shifts to the right. I am not much of a sampler user, more of a sample player. When I first was exposed to samplers (Fairlight) they were ludicrously expensive and severely limited in their capacity. I thought it much better to get people to play real instruments 😉 Silly me.

Expressive Sound Design With EXS24

EXS24 is a fully fledged virtual sampler that allows you to not only load and play extensive libraries of sounds, but to also edit them and use them as starting points for further sonic manipulation. All the controllers and modifiers you would expect to find on an advanced synthesizer are included here and they’re all available from the Editor view of the plug-in window, with the added benefit of a very flexible modulation matrix allowing for all sorts of control signal source routing to various parameters. A flexible Filter section with six switchable modes of operation (high-pass, band-pass and four types of low-pass) provides all the tone-shaping options desired, while the amplifier section is ‘hard-wired’ to velocity (although constant values are also possible via limitation of the range control). Three LFOs and two Envelopes can be freely assigned to any generator or modifier parameter — as well as to each other — using the available modulation matrix, while the Via field allows for assignment of a further modulation source (typically a MIDI controller number, although control signal sources are an option too). The routing possibilities are endless, as are the ways in which a static source sample can be modulated dynamically.

I haven’t used a sampler other than to play back the samples. At some point I might delve into sampling. Certainly having a 24-bit sampler with virtually infinite storage changes the game from the samplers from the 1980s and 1990s.

Because sampler instruments are based on audio recordings, they are ideally suited to emulating real instruments such as guitars, pianos, and drums.

Convert audio regions to sampler instruments — Logic Pro X

You can convert audio regions to sampler instruments with the Convert Regions to New Sampler Track function (default key command: Control-E). All selected regions are sequentially mapped—in accordance with their timeline positions—to the specified key range, starting with the lowest note.

Perhaps best described in the Sound on Sound review of the “new” Logic Pro 9 back in 2009…

The snappily named ‘Convert Regions to New Sampler Track’ command makes it possible to trigger audio regions via EXS24 in one of two ways. First, you can create an EXS24 instrument that maps an audio region so that it can be triggered from one MIDI note, making it easy to recreate ’80s-style st-st-stuttering effects. Or — very neatly — you can ask Logic to create a new EXS24 instrument based on the transients detected in the audio region. In this way, rather like ReCycle and similar loop-based tools, Logic will slice up the audio region and assign each slice to be triggered by a different note. You can specify the range of notes that will be used, which is handy if you want to turn a drum loop into a playable kit on your MIDI keyboard, for example.
